A planned community developer has proposed to build more than 1,000 homes and town houses south of the Border Patrol station.

by Xavier Zaragoza/the daily dispatch This complex is part of Copper Sky Development.

Jim Huff, the consultant on the project, provided a slide show Thursday evening at Faras Elementary School of what the community would look like.

Huff said the design and purpose of the plan is to create a sense of community.

“It would provide a variety of dwelling types to all ages and income levels,” Huff said.

The plan proposed 1,360 residential units that consist of 270 single family homes, 344 town houses, 266 duplexes and 520 apartments.

A major feature is the Village Center, which would serve as a community center, Huff said.

There would be biking and hiking trails and the landscaping would be designed for low water use.

Huff said that there is an anticipated government growth in this area, especially with Homeland Security.

With this government growth, he said there would be a need for affordable short-term housing.

The Baby-Boomers would also be contributing to the growth factor, he said.

Huff said the next step is for Copper Sky to go to the Cochise County Board of Supervisors and petition for rezoning of the area south of the Border Patrol station.

Some of the questions that were raised about the project were how would the community handle its fire department, police department, school, water and sewer issues.

Those issues were concerns that were still being addresses, Huff said.
