BISBEE — A fire destroyed a mobile home and killed a 1 1/2-year-old boy in the San Jose area of Bisbee on Wednesday.

An elderly man and his two grandsons were inside the home at the time, said Robert Coronado, a Bisbee police officer who is investigating the incident.

The man escaped with one of the children, who is younger than 5 years old. However, the younger child, who was 1 1/2 years old, perished. The man was transported to Copper Queen Community Hospital for non-life-threatening smoke inhalation.

The names of the individuals were not released on Wednesday.

It appears the fire originated in the kitchen area, Coronado said. The cause is under investigation.

Authorities were notified of the fire at about 1:15 p.m.

“We got a report of a structural fire with the possibility of a child inside,” said Bisbee Fire Chief Jack Earnest.

The residence is located at space No. 9 in Crestview Estates Mobile Home Park at 400 Santa Cruz Drive.

“It’s a total loss,” Earnest said. “It’s an older manufactured home. Usually something like that is not repairable.”

He said it is tough to fight fires in these types of structures because they tend to burn quickly.

“A lot of these trailers have paneling, insulation and aluminum, which is very thin, and it melts,” he said. “The intensity of the heat melts or breaks the windows. And, once oxygen vents in the house, the fire burns worse.”

Earnest said he was pleased that firefighters were able to contain the fire within the structure and prevent it from spreading to nearby homes.

Both Bisbee fire stations responded with two fire trucks, three ambulances, a brush truck and about 13 firefighters.
