Yuma Border Patrol Agent killed

Published/Last Modified on Tuesday, January 22, 2008 3:05 PM MST

A Border Patrol agent assigned to the Yuma, Ariz. Border Patrol Station was killed in the line of duty Saturday.

About 9:30 AM, agents working in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Area near Andrade, Calif. attempted to stop a suspected smuggler who was believed to have illegally entered the United States. Senior Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar was attempting to deploy a controlled tire deflation device when the suspected smuggler’s vehicle struck and killed him.  Two vehicles, a brown Hummer and a red Ford F-250 pickup, are suspected in the agent’s death.

Both vehicles absconded into Mexico.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigating with full cooperation from other federal, state, and local authorities. Mexican law enforcers and military have also been contacted and are lending full support toward the capture of those involved.

“Today we mourn the loss of one of our own.  Agent Luis Aguilar was also a loving father, husband, son, and brother who proudly served his country.  This serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers our agents face everyday while securing our nation’s border and our way of life.  Despite the ever-present, ever-increasing violence, we will continue in our relentless efforts toward securing America’s borders and making our country, and our communities safer places to live,” said Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and fellow agents.”

This is a tragic loss that is deeply felt by the men and women of the Yuma Sector.  Luis was a member of our family and we will miss him.  The United States Border Patrol will honor Luis’s memory in everything we do as we work to provide for a secure America.

" Lets look at the issue...If the politics of the day prevents these good men and women of the US border patrol from doing thier job, then its the duty of each and every AMERICAN to help out.

when you see one of these coming across the border...give them a warning shot...if they continue, use extreme force to REPEL INVADERS.

Each and every one of us by nature of our citizenship is tasked with DEFENDING THIS NATION AGAINST ALL ENEMY'S FOREIGN OR DOMESTIC. "

" I do not see how being a law abiding citizen and respecting the authorities is racist. I am not aware of the race of the agent in the "shovel thrower's " case, but in the Yuma incident, the agent was hispanic, and we now know that the his murderer is also hispanic. It is a very tragic situation however you look at it. Oh, and by the way, I do have a life one that I cherish so much so, that I am happy to see any smuggler, drug runner or thug be put away!! "

" "Wow your sad", you are probably one of those shovel throwers. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family who lost their loved one. But let me guess, the drug runners who killed this poor man doing his job will never be prosecuted. Why? Because he is a drug runner. But a Border Patrol defends himself and he must go to prison. Something is so wrong here. Respect our Border Patrol Agents! "
