An Hermosillo man was shot in the leg by a Border Patrol agent Thursday morning after the agent made a traffic stop and was caught on the door and dragged by the suspect’s fleeing vehicle.

Xavier Zaragoza/The Daily Dispatch The scene after a Border patrol agent shot a suspect in the leg after the man took off dragging the agent alongside his vehicle.

The shooting victim was transported to a Tucson hospital.

The agent was transported to a local hospital for cuts and abrasions.

Cochise County Sheriff authorities tentatively identified the shooting victim as 29-year-old Luis Sanchez-Barron.

Sanchez-Barron was hit on the left leg, said Carol Capas, the spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

At about 9:30 a.m. the Border Patrol agent made a traffic stop of a 1999 gold in color Chevrolet pick-up truck about 7 and a half miles northwest of Douglas, near the Arizona Department Prison Complex.

Earlier that day the agent had received information that the driver of the truck had loaded several illegal immigrants into vehicle. The information also included the truck’s license plate number, Capas said.

When the agent spotted the truck on Highway 191, he made a traffic stop and approached the vehicle. At that point, Sanchez-Barron decided to flee the scene.

Somehow the agent was trapped on the door of the truck and was dragged about 20 feet before he was able to fire one shot at Sanchez-Barron.

Sanchez-Barron was transported to University Medical Center; the agent was transported to Southeast Arizona Medical Center, where he was treated for cut and abrasions, Capas said.

Four illegal immigrants were in the truck with Sanchez-Barron. The migrant stayed in the truck until authorities arrived. They were detained for further questioning.

The Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency on the incident. The FBI is investigating the assault on the agent and the Department of Homeland Security is doing an internal investigation.

Sweet one young... Unfortunately, Douglas has been getting 'bad publicity' for many many years.
It's up to each generation to make a difference... It's up to you to choose to go the 'right way' and not the 'wrong way'... and you can make a difference in your world.
By you voicing your opinion, you are showing that you care about your city and your future. It's the young generation like you that will make it a better place.

And law enforcment should put their foot down more often. I am always wondering what is in store for generations to come as well as for mine? "

This is a matter of great concern for those of us who choose to live peacefully and productively. These thugs won't respect the law, who is to say what they will do to us if they are not stopped!!!

I say you choose to give up your "human rights" when you choose to break the law. "
