BISBEE — A 5-year-old girl who was missing in the Huachuca Mountains and then rescued after an extensive search operation last week has been returned to her mother in Mexico.

Candy Barranco-Gonzales was traveling with a group of illegal immigrants and was abandoned Thursday night. Officials found her Friday morning.

Candy was delivered to officials in Mexico at the Naco port of entry and was taken to a shelter for children Friday night, said Gustavo Morales, of consular protection at the Mexican Consulate in Douglas.

“She stayed there until the mother could come and pick her up,” he said on Wednesday. “The mother was in Juarez and she came up here to take custody of the child on Monday.”

Candy was crossing into the United States with her stepfather. He was apprehended on Thursday. He later told authorities that the girl had been left behind.

Officials conducted a search that lasted more than 10 hours.

She was found cold and shaking but unharmed Friday morning in Miller Canyon south of Sierra Vista, about eight miles north of the Mexican border.

The girl was not turned over to her stepfather because he did not have legal custody of her.
