The House Counties, Municipalities and Military Affairs Committee on Tuesday will hold a hearing on Rep. Manny Alvarez’s bill to help the developmentally disabled.

House Bill 2219 makes it easier for organizations that provide developmentally disabled services to acquire property for their facilities.

The bill states that counties with a population of 100,000 people or less may sell, without appraisal or public auction and at a price determined by the county board of supervisors, any real property that is currently being leased by the county to any non-profit entity that is providing developmentally disabled services.

“I sponsored this bill after hearing from local organizations in District 25 that they need assistance in acquiring affordable property so they can provide services to the developmentally disabled,” said Rep. Manny Alvarez of Elfrida.

“By helping these organizations acquire affordable property, we can help people receive services close to their home,” Rep. Alvarez said.  “Ensuring that people do not have to travel long distances for necessary services is especially important for rural parts of the state.”

The House  Counties, Municipalities and Military Affairs Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in House Hearing Room 5.

The hearing can be viewed online by visiting http://www.azleg.gov/ and clicking on “Live Proceedings.”

Rep. Alvarez represents most of Cochise County, the southern portion of Santa Cruz County, the western part of Pima County, and the southwest portion of Maricopa County.
