An art sale and art show will raise funds to support and develop a leadership, youth and entrepreneurial program in the Douglas area.

Xavier Zaragoza/The Daily Dispatch Richard Paun adds the last minute touches to the artwork for Friday’s art show and sale at The Gallery.

The art show will be held Friday, Feb. 1, at The Gallery at 625 10th Street. Music and refreshments will be available.

A variety of local artists will be at The Gallery, displaying their work.

Their work ranges from ceramics, paintings, quilt work and more. The work is for sale in order to raise money for the program.

The Cochise Community Foundation has challenged the Douglas Area Community Foundation to raise $50,000 for the program.

The program still has another $19,000 to raise in order to meet the challenge.

The challenge is part of the Hometown Competitiveness conference that was held at Cochise College in March of 2006.

HTC is a framework for community development based on the philosophy that rural communities can control their destiny by investing their own time, talent and money in small business development, leadership development, youth engagement and local philanthropy.

By raising the $50,000 from residents through the art show, the DACF is eligible to receive a matching $50,000 grant.

The Ford Foundation, through the U.S./Mexico Border Philanthropy Project, will provide funds for the matching grant.

The Fund is guided by a local advisory board consisting of nine interested citizens.

The current advisory board members include Chuck Hoyack(Chair); Lucia Spikes(Co-Chair); Morris Eckhardt(Treasurer); Victor Gonzales(communication secretary); Sister Mary Kirkoff, Susan Krentz, Olga Ramirez de Miquez, Pat Ortega and Gerardo Gonzales. Other staff includes Del Cabarga and Jim and Carol Huddleston.
