The Best Western Hotel project received permanent financial approval pending the outcome of an environmental assessment.

Artist’s rendering of hotel similar to the one being built in Douglas.

City Manager Curtis Shook said he was notified by Comerica Bank about the financial backing for the hotel.

Comerica Bank is the financial arm of the Small Business Administration.

The long awaited hotel will be located on 7th Street and Pan American.

The lot on 7th Street had been set aside by the Douglas City Council for a hotel, but the deal through previous negotiations could never come through––until now.

The hotel, which will be less than half a mile from the Douglas Port of Entry, could also mark the beginning of positive growth for that site.

The area all ready has a handful of national chain restaurants and markets.

The hotel will be three stories with about 50 rooms and a large conference room, said Paco Patel, the manager for the Douglas Hotel Development on June 1, 2007 during the hotel’s ground breaking

“Unfortunately, we did not have space for a restaurant. If we had, we wouldn’t have had space for parking,” Patel said.

Building a new hotel in Douglas has long been a dream and a hassle for the mayor and city council. Too often the deals fell through for one reason or another.

The construction of the hotel will dovetail with the proposed Government Plaza for the Downtown area. The plaza will be designed not only to attract and consolidate the existing Cochise County services in Douglas but also other business as well.
