At 4:45 a.m., Hesch “turned into Judd Drive, drove up to the side entrance gate of the Cochise County Jail, and proceeded to ram it with his BMW,” Cochise County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carol Capas said. “When the gate did not open, he put the car in reverse, turning over a concrete barrier.”
Capas said that as detention officers were attempting to get Hesch to stop, he continued to try to get off the concrete barrier, on which the BMW was high-centered, back wheels over the edge, and proceeded to run beside a large trash container, damaging the passenger side of the car before going back down Judd Drive toward Highway 80.
“Then he turned back up Judd Drive, and proceeded to run into a concrete post before stalling the vehicle,” Capas said.
Bisbee police and sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, and Hesch declined to take a Breathalyzer, so officers did a blood draw, Capas said.
Though the results of his blood-alcohol test are not back yet, according to officers on scene Hesch appeared to be “extremely intoxicated,” Capas said.
“He indicated that he had been drinking in Mexico and he was trying to find his way back to Cochise College,” she said.
