TUCSON – The Douglas Lady Bulldogs track team kicked off its season Wednesday competing against Buena and Marana Mountain View in a triangular meet.

Douglas’ track coach Donna Savill says she has 42 girls out for track this year making this one of the largest teams she’s had since taking over the Lady Bulldogs track program and she was trying out different athletes in different events trying to see where they would fit in.
Freshmen Jordan Arvayo and Leilani Skinner had an excellent meet placing first and second respectively in the 400-meters with times of 1:04.2 and 1:04.7.
Coach Savill said this was an excellent start for these two young athletes who were running against more experienced 5A runners.
"This shows a bright future for not only them but also the team," the coach said.
Lizzy Clark placed third in the long jump with a jump of 13’5 while Arvayo was fourth with a jump of 12’11".
Brianna Salazar placed fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles turning in a time of 20.1 seconds.
Kristi Cormier placed second in the 3200-meters turning in a time of 13:23.
Erica McGrew placed third in both the shot put and the discus events recording throws of 27’7" and 72-feet.
Coach Savill said McGrew also had a good first meet and should do well again this year.
The coach added Cormier also had a very good race in the 3200.
"Considering we were going against two 5A schools I was happy with how things went today," the coach said.
The Lady Bulldogs are back in action next Wednesday running in a meet at Catalina. The annual Ted James Douglas Invitational is set for next Friday.
