Dr. Earl Pettit has been selected as the next superintendent of the Douglas Unified School District.

The selection came after daylong visits last week by the three remaining candidates Pettit, Dr. James Ronald Hennings and Dr. David L. Gray.

In a special meeting on Friday, the governing board decided to offer Pettit a contract, which he subsequently accepted.

Earl Pettit was superintendent at the Whiteriver Unified School District in Arizona, and principal at the Canyon Day Junior High School, also in Whiteriver. He has a bachelors in Sociology: Criminal Justice; masters in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership Program.

More information on the new superintendent will be in the Tuesday, February 26, issue of The Daily Dispatch.

" i am glad you agree that we need to get the democratic congress out of Wash DC. (that should be what you mean). Secondly, good neighbors, tell THEM to be good neighbors, instead of what they actually are...perpetrators and such. We do need change at DHS, and the rest of the district. But we can't get that by hiring teachers who can't speak english teaching children that can't speak english. Can't pass AIMS like that, also can not get money if it is shown you cant pass as a school district. "

" What this district really needs is funding. The Federal Admin has failed with No Child Left Behind mandate setting requiements then not fully funding the programs. We need a new president and a congress willing to invest in people and their future. Our children need to be this country's priority. Residency is a wedge issue used by Republicans to further their bigotry and futher the vulcanization of the community, built by bi-national strengths with a common geography - the US/ Mex border. Former Governor Fannin once said "God made us neighbors, let us be goodneighbors." "

" Finally we have change in Douglas. Hopefully this man can turn around a district that is very weak and suffers from lack of money. Enforce the residency requirments that is bleeding our resources and maybe our children can have a future. "
