The Douglas Bulldog tennis team kicked off its season Tuesday falling to the Sabino Sabercats 6-3 at the 8th Street Park tennis courts.

Hector Rosales also lost 0-8.

Jesus Duarte was an 8-1 winner and Casey Hoyack fell 0-8.

In doubles play Luy and Rosales fell 5-8 and Duarte and Hoyack were defeated 0-8.

After the match Douglas’ tennis coach Katie Walker said it was a good opener for her kids and it allowed her to see some things she doesn’t always see at practice.

"I know what we now need to focus on," she said. "I was happy to see Joe Owen win his match against Sabino’s No. 1. That was huge for him."

The coach said this win for Owen can only help his confidence throughout the rest of the season.

"He’s young, he works hard in practice, he wants to play and he wants to be here," the coach said.

Walker returns four players from last year’s Gila Region championship team.

"With this new alignment I’m not sure yet what to expect," she said. We’ll definitely be contenders."

The coach said she’s not sure what to expect yet from Sahuarita, Catalina and Amphi but after this week is over she’ll have a better idea.

"This was a very good opener," she said. "I was very happy with how the kids played. I’m okay with a 3-6 score against Sabino."

The Bulldog netters return to action Thursday hosting Catalina Foothills in a 2 p.m. match before taking to the road Friday to battle Sahuaro.
