Having played their first two matches of the season on the road the Douglas Lady Bulldogs tennis team finally had its home opener Friday hosting the Sahuaro Cougars in a non-conference match at the 8th Street Park tennis court.

The Lady Bulldogs seemed to show some effects of playing their third match in four days falling 6-3.

Alexis Romero, playing No. 1 singles for Douglas, won her match 6-4, 6-3.

Keo Skinner, playing in the No. 2 spot, fell 4-6, 4-6.

Rozela Melgoza, playing at No. 3 singles, was defeated 5-7, 1-6.

Danitza Montano won her match by injury default at No. 4 singles.

Aurielle Vildosola, playing No. 5 singles, fell 2-6, 4-6 and Joanna Favela, playing No. 6 singles, was defeated 0-6, 0-6.

In doubles play Douglas’ No. 1 doubles duo of Romero and Skinner won their match 8-0.

The Lady Bulldogs No. 2 doubles team of Montano and Melgoza fell 1-8.

The Lady Bulldogs No. 3 doubles team of Favela and Vildosola fell 4-8.

There were no junior varsity matches Friday.

Douglas’ new tennis coach Katie Vieluf said the matches were competitive and she felt the effort was there but in order to be more successful on the court there needs to be a greater effort with no days off and more commitment.

The coach said the girls have to want to improve and not be satisfied with where they’re at now.

The Lady Bulldogs, 0-3, kick off league play next week hosting Palo Verde on Thursday before heading to Sahuarita on Friday.
