Published/Last Modified on Friday, March 7, 2008 3:05 PM MST

Ivan Huish is running unopposed for his seat in Ward 5.

Huish, 73, has served on the Douglas City Council for two and a half years.

He graduated from Douglas High School in 1952. He also graduated from International Correspondence Schools in 1958 and the Commercial Trades Institute in 1960.

He has served as president of  Babe Ruth Baseball, coach of Little League teams and member of the Board of Adjustment for the city of Douglas.

He is married to wife, Betty, and the couple have sons Ivan L., David, Joey, Robby and Tim; daughters Cindy Fainberg, Marilyn James and Sherri Smith; and 31 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Why should I vote for you? I am interested in the welfare of the citizens of Douglas and the surrounding area.

What is a primary goal you want accomplished during your four-year term, and how will you achieve that goal? Increase the street lighting and develop more programs for the youth and the elderly, by allocating additional funding for these programs.

What primary goal should the council as a whole have over the next four years? Continued improvement of downtown area and solicit industrial and commercial jobs to improve economy.

What unique characteristic do your bring to the council? I am a native of Douglas and have lived here all of my 73 years and am familiar with city's needs and desires.

One area facing all communities is the economy. What are your plans for the Douglas economy? Continue to solicit new industry such as the Call Center and other commercial companies. Use ex-Douglasites who were raised here and are leaders and officers in their corporations and companies to help promote Douglas as an excellent location for businesses.
