NACO, Sonora — Police recently arrested two Mexican men who were trying to smuggle marijuana across the border from the Naco, Sonora, area into the United States.

The smugglers who were arrested are identified as Ofelio Covarruvias Flores, 34, of Cananea, Sonora, and Manuel Soto Quihui, 34, of Bacanuchi, Sonora.
Police recovered six bundles that were wrapped in black plastic bags and contained a dry green grass with physical characteristics of marijuana, according to a press release from the Naco, Sonora, police department. The total weight of the drugs is about 86 kilograms, or about 189 pounds.
Martin Lomeli, assistant police chief of Naco, Sonora, said a drug seizure of this size has not occurred since last summer.
“It happens once or twice per year,” he said during an interview Monday.
The suspects resisted arrest and during the struggle with police, they were injured, according to the press release. But, Lamberto Cuevas, a doctor at the health center in Naco, Sonora, determined that their wounds were not serious.
The two are currently being held in the federal prison in Agua Prieta, Sonora, according to Lomeli.
