Former Councilman Dr. Michael Gomez became the city's first new mayor in more than a decade when he garnered 53 percent of the votes cast in the Tuesday, March 11 election.

According to unoffical results, Gomez finished with 872 votes or 53.66 percent. Cruz Silva took 11.75 percent of the votes cast, or 191 votes;  former councilman Michael "Smokey" Molina received 169 votes or 10.4 percent and there were 393 write-in ballots for mayor. It is assumed many of those votes went to write-in candidate Natalio Sabal.

There is no clear cut winner in Ward 1 with Margaret Morales receiving 106 or 47.3 percent of the vote, Alfredo Garcia, 90 votes or 40.2 percent; and Bill Wendt, 28 votes or 12.5 percent.

To win the seat outright in the primary election, one of the candidates would have had to receive 50 percent plus 1 vote.

Bob Fernandez easily defeated incumbent Ben LaForge for the Ward 3 seat, 251-130.

Ray Shelton also took the Ward 4 seat with 198 votes compared to Frank Ambriz total of 120 votes

Ward 5 councilman Ivan Huish and Ward 6 councilman Jose Acedo each ran unopposed.

Proposition 300, the Home Rule measure easily won by a vote of 1,143 to 418 votes.

The votes are scheduled to be canvassed on March 18.

" Natalio Sabal would have been the most progressive. I am very disappointed he did not win. Taking second is incredible for a write in. Had he been named on the ballot I am sure he would have won. "

" Considering the field, these look like the best choices. It would have been nice to see some other more progressive choices.

Is there anyone left in Douglas that could provide the needed leadership and responsibility? Unfortunately, Douglas definitely suffers from serious brain-drain.

Always hoping for the best for my hometown. Good luck.
