Douglas High School wrestler Edward Noriega has been invited to attend the Junior Nationals wrestling tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia later this month.

Noriega says its going to cost him $3,500 to take part in the three day event and he already has over $1,000 set aside.

To help raise the remaining $2,500 Noriega and his supporters will be having a Barbacoa fundraiser this Sunday from 11-3 at the Douglas Noon Lions Club on Ninth Street.

Cost is $5 per plate. There will also be a raffle.

Several years ago former DHS wrestler Luciano Gonzalez made the trip and Noriega says he saw the effects the tournament had on him so he’s hoping to take advantage of what he learns at nationals when he’s a senior next year at DHS.

Noriega placed sixth in the 215 pound weight class at the 4A Division II state tournament this past season.

“When I go and compete I’ll be representing not only Douglas but also the state of Arizona,” he said. “It is possible I could wrestle another Arizona wrestler at the tournament but I don’t know that for sure yet.”

DHS wrestling coach Arturo Moreno will accompany Noriega to Virginia

Anyone wanting more information or to make a contribution may contact Noriega at 805-1532.
