Services set for Douglas soldier killed in Iraq

The body of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ernesto Guadalupe Cimarrusti who was killed last week in Baghdad by a suicide bomber arrived in Douglas Monday.


More than 75 people were in attendance at the Bisbee-Douglas International Airport Monday at noon to view the return of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ernesto Guadalupe Cimarrusti to Douglas. His body was flown into the airport at about 12:20 p.m. yesterday. Among those in attendance were representatives of every federal, state, county and local emergency services that serve Douglas including the Department of Public Safety, Douglas Police, Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and the Fire Department, along with representatives of the U.S. Army. Family and friends are consoled just before a procession of more than 20 vehicles leave the airport.

His funeral is scheduled  following the Mass of the Resurection  Wednesday at St. Luke’s Church on 15th Street.  The Mass will be held at 11:30 Wednesday morning.

There will be a full military memorial to follow at Calvary Cemetery with burial to take place Thursday in Cananea.

Visitation will be held at St. Luke’s today, Tuesday, March 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. The Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. tonight.

Cimarrusti, a 2000 DHS graduate, was serving his third tour in Iraq. He has been in the Army seven years and was stationed in Fort Stewart, GA.

Born July 26, 1982, Cimarrusti is survived by his wife Illiana (Perez) Cimmarusti, his daughter, Vivianaiy, his parents whose names were not available but reside in Cananea, Son. plus several other brothers and sisters who remain in Douglas.

U.S. Army Specialist Isaac Campoy, who was killed in Oct. 2003, was Douglas’ first casualty of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Anybody can speak of how great this nation is but it takes a true American to back it up by giving their life so many others can live free day to day.
