Health Department offers nutrition demonstration at Food City

Have you ever asked yourself if frozen vegetables are just as good as or better than fresh? What about all of the energy drinks out there – are they really good for us, or do they just make us tired and fat? Soups are considered one of the top ten slimming foods – but are all soups alike? The answers to these and other questions will be answered by the Cochise County Health Department as part of a free informational event on March 31st at the Food City Stores in Willcox and Douglas from 9 a.m. until noon.

To recognize March as National Nutrition Month®?, County Health Department staff will meet with interested Food City Store shoppers on site at each store. Participants will not only walk away with items checked off their personal shopping lists, but also expert recommendations on what to add to their lists for healthier food choices.

“There is so much information out there that can overwhelm anyone trying to make some simple changes in their nutrition,” said Robin Falconer, Registered Dietitian and Director of Prevention Services.  “This is a great opportunity for County staff to personally talk to shoppers and address any questions or concerns they might have. Just a couple of small changes can really empower people to make the right food choices.”

Amy Roy, nutrition intern at the County Health Department, emphasizes that the tried and true resources are better than the latest fads. “We want to encourage people to use credible sources of information, such as the food pyramid by the United States Department of Agriculture or from a registered dietitian, when making changes in their diet for health or weight loss.  Just because it’s on the Internet doesn’t mean it’s true.”

County Health Department staff will be present to answer nutrition-related questions the public might have. Staff from the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program will also host an information booth containing brochures and handouts on WIC services and general nutrition information.
