Ibanez drives in 3 to pace Seattle past Arizona

PEORIA (AP) - Raul Ibanez needed nearly three weeks to start feeling comfortable at the plate.

Three days after hitting his first home run of the spring, Ibanez had two hits and drove in three runs off Arizona starter Micah Owings to help the Seattle Mariners to a 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

``I’m just trying to work on stuff and get ready,’’ Ibanez said. ``Hopefully every day you get a little closer. It’s starting to get better. Hopefully it’ll get more consistent.’’

Ibanez doubled off Owings in the first to drive in two runs then lined a two-out, RBI single in the second to give Seattle a 4-1 lead.

The Mariners need more performances like that from Ibanez if they are to make a serious run at the Los Angeles Angels in the AL West.

Ichiro Suzuki and Richie Sexson have also had quiet springs for Seattle. Suzuki went 1-for-4 against Arizona, raising his average to .119. Sexson struck out twice, walked and grounded out.

``I just try to do what I’m capable of doing and focus on what my job is,’’ Ibanez said. ``That’s to drive in runs in the middle of this lineup, now and during the season.’’

Seattle starter Jarrod Washburn labored over 3 1-3 innings but still picked up his first win of the spring. The Mariners’ left-hander struck out four, but gave up six hits and walked two.

Washburn gave up a run in the first and two more in the fourth before being replaced by reliever Ryan Rowland-Smith with runners on first and third. Washburn used the outing to work on his change-up.

``This is the place to find out if I can trust that pitch when I need it later on,’’ he said. ``I threw it quite a bit today in situations I wouldn’t normally throw it. That’s the luxury of spring training. The outcome doesn’t matter so you have the options to work on things a little different from the norm.’’

Owings had a rougher night than Washburn.

The Diamondbacks right-hander gave up a leadoff single to Suzuki in the first and walked Jose Lopez before Ibanez doubled off the wall in right-center to drive in two runs. Owings struck out Sexson on four pitches, but a bloop RBI single by Brad Wilkerson drove in another run.

In the second, Owings gave up a one-out double to Yuniesky Betancourt, then hit Lopez with a pitch before back-to-back run-scoring singles by Ibanez and Adrian Beltre made it 5-1.

``I think the numbers don’t dictate how I felt,’’ Owings said. ``Early on I got my pitch count up and fought through some stuff. I’m not pleased with the outcome, I’m not pleased with the numbers but it is what it is. It’s time to flush it and take what I can from this game.’’
