The students have taken on honors projects, and many are members of their campus chapters of Phi Theta Kappa honor society. The Western Regional Honors Council (WRHC) is a professional organization of faculty, administrators, and students dedicated to the promotion and advancement of undergraduate honors education. The conference brings together community college and university students for several days of leadership and networking activities. Irma Pena, a student at the Douglas Campus, will be joined by Adriana Padilla, Jessica Fuentes, and faculty advisor Dave Pettes to present “The Unending Cycle of Prejudice and Discrimination.” They have worked on a project to survey middle school students across Cochise County about the topic, and they have also returned to middle schools to present their research and findings.
Another Douglas Campus student - Adalberto Valencia – will present “COOKIES: A Good Batch that Keeps Getting Better.” The topic is the COOKIES program, which the Student Government Association has taken on as a mentoring project for students in Douglas elementary schools. Valencia’s co-presenters are Alan Manquero, Britni Walker, Renee Beltran, Cecilia Avila and faculty advisor Dr. Michel Ouellette.
Sierra Vista Campus student Mark Nobles will present “The History According to Hollywood,” and Margaret Smith will join with Shelly Gordon, Brian Dewitt, Olivia Young, Staci Smith, and Gracia Wolfe to perform “Peter and the Wolf” in American Sign Language, set to piano score.
