Colors of Success, a non-profit organization that helps at-risk students in Douglas and Cochise County, has been awarded a $5,100 grant from the Cochise Community Foundation’s Bob Holcombe Fund to expand incentives for its Vision for the Future program.

Curtis Washington, Colors of Success project coordinator, said the grant comes at the right time and will help more students succeed.

“We are grateful to the Cochise Community Foundation for this grant,” Washington said. “It has been a great pleasure working with DUSD’s Dr. Earl Simmons and Leanne Marston and students of this community to prepare them for a successful future.”

The grant will extend their incentive program for graduating and for career-bound youth.

Colors of Success and DUSD No. 27 partnered in 2007 to implement the program, which utilizes an Arizona certified teacher, youth and family specialist and school specialist to achieve educational and occupational success for students.

The program enrolls students in job readiness training, remedial education intervention, college and vocational entry support and family strengthening services.

“The vision for our students is to encourage them to reach beyond the attainment of a high school diploma,” said DUSD Superintendent Gail Zamar. “The partnership with Colors of Success affords us the opportunity to open doors for our students and encourage them to step forward into a promising and rewarding future.”

The program is also working in three other Cochise County school districts—Sierra Vista, Benson and Tombstone—to boost school attendance, increase academic performance and reduce school disciplinary problems. Students receive the education necessary to prepare them for college or to be competitive in the job market.

Don Hudgins and Sally Holcombe serve on the advisory board of the Cochise Community Foundation. Hudgins says the Bob Holcombe Fund is committed to ensuring that students will receive individual educational and vocational success.

“We are pleased to see Colors of Success and DUSD No. 27 working together to leverage available resources in helping students pursue their education,” said Hudgins. “The passion you share for student success is the same as the donors’, who make this grant possible.”

The Colors of Success has been serving Douglas since 2004 and partnered with DUSD since 2007.

The Cochise Community Foundation, through affiliation with the Arizona Community Foundation, is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that works to build community now and for years to come by connecting donor interests with community needs in Cochise County.
