Omega Alpha Academy wins first prize in computer repair challenge at Cochise College

Cochise College and the Fort Huachuca’s Southern Arizona Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association hosted a computer challenge at the college’s Sierra Vista Campus Friday March 7, 2008.  About 180 students; five high schools and six middle schools through out Cochise County took part.

Osmar Ortega, 17, a senior, and Angel Duarte, 16, a junior, at Omega Alpha Academy (OAA) in Douglas, competed as a team in the computer/PC repair event.  This event was facilitated by instructor Rick Gill.  In this event, the computers which were sabotaged in various ways were set up in the classroom for the competitors in teams of two to trouble shoot them. They also had to arrange in order from oldest to newest 10 processors that were laid out for them. The two OAA students added that eight other students from their school participated in different areas of the event.  Ortega said he sees the relevance of technology in the employment area, but said he in not interested in pursuing a technical career.  

OAA is the only school in Douglas that as a district made AYP this year.  OAA has come a long way to become a highly performing school in grades kindergarten through high school.  It is the first time that OAA has participated in such a competition and has won the 1st prize.  

In all, the following awards were won by OAA high school students.

Aaron Martinez –  4th Place – Word Processing

Aaron Martinez –  6th Place – Microsoft Office Suite Theory
