The Douglas Bulldogs had their four-game win streak snapped Friday in a 6-2 loss to Amphi, the No. 1 team in the state.

Bulldog third baseman Fabian Ochoa lays down a tag on an Amphi runner in the first inning of Douglas’ Gila Regional showdown with Amphi – the No. 1 team in the state. The Panthers beat Douglas 6-2 snapping the Bulldogs four-game win streak and taking over sole possession of first place in the Gila Region.

The win at Copper King Stadium gives Amphi sole possession of first place in the Gila Region while dropping Douglas into a tie for second with Catalina.

Kyle Cormier was the losing pitcher for Douglas. Cormier went the distance and gave up six runs off eight hits while fanning six and walking one.

Amphi tagged Cormier for two runs off one hit, a walk and an error in the top half of the first inning taking a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the fourth increasing their lead to 4-0.

The Bulldogs finally scored in the fourth when Cormier tripled and later scored on a ground out.

Alexis Aguirre’s run in the fifth cut Amphi’s lead to 4-2.

The Panthers added two more runs in the top of the seventh increasing their lead to 6-2.

Douglas finished with six hits on the night. Adrian Romo was 2 for 3, Cormier 1 for 2 and Aguirre, AJ Acosta and Jesus Salazar each were 1 for 3.

Douglas’ baseball coach Gilbert Rojas said afterwards his team was a little nervous at the start and it showed as Amphi got two quick runs in the top of the first.

The coach added his team made some base running mistakes in the fourth showing its youthfulness.

Still Rojas said this was a “respectable showing” by his team against a very good Amphi team.

“We feel we can play with them,” the coach said. “We just need to play better. They don’t beat themselves. We have to play a perfect game.”

On Monday the Bulldogs, 4-1 in league play, 11-9 overall, have another big game taking on No. 9 Catalina at Catalina.

Douglas’ JV’s fell to Amphi’s junior varsity 10-4 Friday in Tucson.

Chris Mariscal threw two innings for Douglas giving up three runs off two hits while fanning two and walking four.

Tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the third Amphi scored a run taking a 3-2 lead. The Panthers followed up with a five run fourth increasing their lead to 8-2. Douglas scored twice in the top of the fifth making the score 8-4 only to see Amphi close out with a two run sixth.
