A former Douglas resident was handed the death penalty for his part in the 2004 beating death of a five-year–old girl.

Joshua Villalobos, 25, was given the death penalty Wednesday in a Phoenix court.

In January 3, 2004 Villalobos was booked for one count of child abuse in the death of Ashley Molina.

According to police reports, investigators detained Villalobos shortly after he and girlfriend, Linda Verdugo, now 24, took Ashley to Arrowhead Community Hospital in North Phoenix.

Villalobos, then 21, was home watching the children on Jan. 3, 2004, while Verdugo was working at Wal-Mart during the late shift. Villalobos would later tell police that he got angry and punched Ashley in the stomach. There had been an argument between Ashley and the couple’s two-year-old daughter, Anyssa.

Verdugo was also charged for her part in failing to protect her daughter. She pleaded guilty. Under her plea deal, she could get a year in jail or up to 15 years in prison. In exchange, she will have to testify against her old boyfriend.

Villalobos was a member of the Class of 2000 at Douglas High School.

" This is just a missunderstanding. People who do not even know what really happend have things real twisted. Joshua was trying to become someone in life after his inprisonment in Tucson for transporting drugs.During his time his first daugher was born. He served enough time to understand that child abusers wern't liked in prison. He did not comit this life altering issue. Ashley lived with Linda's parent's since she was born. Linda considerd her as a mistake in her life! She was 5 years old and couldn't even talk propurly due to the lack of care. This child later in life moved away Douglas into Phoenix into an apparment with he little sister, step father and mother. They strived for a better life. When Before Ashley died the day before she would say that her tummy hurt. The "170 bruses" wernt from that "one day". He did not beat her to death. Asley died that night and was discoverd by Joshua when he would checked them at night before they went to bed. Linda would sleep in Joshuas shirt. That shirt had Ashleys vomit. Thats a tool that Linda is using agaisnt Joshua in court since she doesnt want to do time. She lied herself to freedom. She knows it herself that Joshua is INNOCENT ! Joshua knew Linda was just weeks Pregnet with Joshuas baby boy. Joshua wanted her to become free from prison and to take care his daughter Anyssa and soon to come his new born son Joshua Jr. He knew that the govornment would take Joshua away for what the issue was. He took the blame for Asleys life. She will always be missed. Many people who know Joshua know that he was raised by good people. His father was hard on him as a child. He never wanted the same for his own. Joshua's father didnt have a father figuer in life. This just shows how justice isn't served correctly! "

" The saddest thing here is that an innocent little girl lost her life because her mother didn't protect her. She could've given Ashley to the biological father or the grandparents to raise but she chose to keep her in an abusive atmosphere. She chose to be selfish and her daughter payed the ultimate price. I've never understood how someone could beat such an adorable little girl. How he could have so much anger inside to beat a child the way that he did. The mom can't claim to be innocent because she had to have known I don't think the 170 bruises were a result of one beating. It was probably multiple beatings, and not once did she do anything to stop it. So what I really want to say is that she's as much of a monster as he is for not having the guts to stand up for her daughter and making sure the Ashley was safe even if that meant she had to be a single, single not alone because she had a lot of people to rely on. What kind of a person is she that a man is more important than her child. Many people want to make her a victom because they can't imagine what kind of a person would put herself before her children but she isn't. The only victom here was Ashley and the biological father who lost the person he loved the most in this world, but for some reason no one ever thinks of him and what he's going through. "

" a mother is suppose to protect her children from anyone and anything, this mother chose not to, but instead look away and let her child suffer through the hands of this monster, she should be put away for the rest of her life,Ashley got hers taken away, why should the mother be free, only one year..please keep her in there and throw the key away!Have mercy for this little Angel that didn't even get a chance at life... " How can a mother not know her child is being beaten when there are burses all over 170 burses. She knew but chose not believe it because she loved him more than her own child.
Her selfishness to have a male. She could haved stop it since the first time he layed his hands on Ashley. She is just as evil as him! She should have gone to prison. How can she live with self and move on? Alshley may you finaly rest in peace litle angel. "
