The City of Douglas has an agreement to buy the former Bayless building on 1701 10th Street from the First Assembly of God.

The old Bayless building, vacant since the early to mid 1990s, could be a hub of activity if a new call center opens.

If all goes well, the building will be renovated and used for the proposed call center that is anticipated to hire 300 to 500 workers.

Architects and engineers are in the process of reviewing the building for structural integrity and the cost of renovation, said Curtis Shook, the City Manager for Douglas.

Phase one of the process will include an environmental assessment.

“Pending the results of the study, the City will be buying the building for the call center,” Shook said.

Shook said the cost of the building is about $500,000.

Shook said he remains hopeful about bringing the call center to Douglas.

On Feb 22 and 23 the City hosted a job fair at the Visitor Center. At the fair, potential employees were interviewed about job skills and, most importantly, measured the strength of the labor pool in this area.

The job fair organizers were pleased with the turnout.
