The beautification project for Castro Park continues to make headway.

By Xavier Zaragoza/The Daily Dispatch Castro Park will have a water fountain, along with other improvements as part of the beautification project.

“Our facilities staff has been working on improvements over the last two months,” said Charles Ebner, the City’s community development director.

These improvements include removing the unused concrete courts and constructing new decorative sidewalks, planting trees and plants, installing benches, science exhibits and a decorative fountain, Ebner said.

On Tuesday the crew installed the base structure for the nine-foot fountain. The fountain is centered in the middle of the project and is designed to use less water than traditional fountains of the same size, Ebner said.

The crew has put glow in the dark material at the base of the fountain, which will be a great effect for kids, he said.

“We are still working on the science exhibits,” he said. “All the exhibits will be life size and true in measurement and detail,” he said.

One of the exhibits will be a T-Rex dinosaur that lived during the Cretaceous Period, which is about 85 to 65 millions years ago. The crew will be constructing a life-size head with a jaw that is up to four feet long.

There will also be T-Rex foot imprints on the concrete. The footprints will be 1.55 feet long with a stride length of up to 12 to 15 feet, he said.

Other dinosaur exhibits will include a Raptor footprint and skull. A raptor egg nest has been completed, which looks very realistic, he said. The project is scheduled to be finished by summer.

" I would suggest that those who feel that this is a 'waste' of time and money do something PRODUCTIVE about it, such as talking to their councilman about it, or even attending a council meeting. Simply leaving a comment on this thread helps no one in our community. I encourage those who think this to be 'idiotic' exercise their rights as a citizen of Douglas and use the means available to you to help make a difference, instead of simply posting your thoughts online. " This is a wonderful project that I am sure many communitiy members will enjoy, especially kids. Sure, there are improvements that need to be made but the community deserves to have something nice and entertaining too. There has to be a balance. The city has done many projects to improve roads and city services, and they continue. Kudos to the City of Douglas and Mr. Ebner!! "

" Wow congrats City of Douglas you sure know how to spend our money on idiotic reasons, So instead of fixing streets like A Avenue and spending money on other big things like our sewers our city gets us a T- Rex at Castro Park... Congrats Mr. Ebner you look smarter than you are "
