BISBEE — A man charged with assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol agent who shot his dog in Bisbee Junction last year pleaded guilty during a hearing in federal court in Tucson on Tuesday.

Gil Nelson jumped on Agent Jeremy Poser’s neck, put him in a headlock and sprained a finger last April. The agent had responded to an activated sensor in a wash near Nelson’s home and shot his dog.

Nelson entered his change of plea during a hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Bernardo Velasco, according to the court’s minute entry.

Velasco ordered that a pre-sentence report be prepared.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 23 at 9 a.m. before Judge David Bury in U.S. District Court in Tucson.

Matthew Green, Nelson’s attorney, and Sandy Raynor, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, did not respond to phone calls from Wick News Service requesting comment Tuesday. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Flannigan is prosecuting the case.
