Cochise College will present a wonderful pian-opportunity on May 2 – a professional-level performance by students beginning a concert career.

University of Arizona graduate students JiYoung Kim and Katherine Christensen will perform a free recital at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2 in Kino Hall, 800 Taylor Drive. Tune in to Bach, Liszt, Debussy, Lutoslowski and Brahms performed on the spectacular Kawaii concert grand piano. Both musicians are students of pianist Tannis Gibson, who began the pianists-on-tour program as a performance opportunity for grad students.

A native of Seoul, South Korea, Kim began piano study at age 6 and three years later won her first competition playing a Mozart piano sonata. In 1995, she came to the U.S. to attend Vermont’s Putney School. She also studied at the Hochschule fuer Musik Koeln (Abteilung Wuppertal) in Germany and has participated in the Tanglewood Music Festival, Rocky Ridge Music Center, School for International Musical Arts in Canada, and New Millennium Piano Festival in Spain. Last December, she earned a master’s of music from the University of Arizona. She was a founding member of Trio Liebevoll, which has been broadcast on KUAT 90.5 MHz. Kim is pursuing a doctoral degree in musical arts.

A native of Boise, Idaho, Christensen received a bachelor’s of music in piano performance from Rice University. She was active as a chamber musician, soloist, and performer of new works and has attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and Aspen Music Festival and played in master classes.

 with John Perry, Anthony di Bonaventura, Ralph Votapek and Speculum Musicae. She is pursuing a master’s in piano performance and last fall received honorable mention in the President's Concerto Competition. She teaches opera to first-graders in the Tucson Unified School District through Opening Minds through the Arts and is a member of the Tucson Chamber Artists and the Arizona Choir.
