Douglas volunteers truly “Made a Difference” Saturday during a community cleanup.

Douglas kids besides helping their community had the chance to enjoy some fun activities, like the water slide, outside of the Visitors Center. To see more pictures about ‘Make a Difference Day’ go to page B4 in todays edition.

During “Make a Difference Day,” a total of 102 people volunteered and 300 bags of trash were picked up across the city. During the free dump day, there were also 52 truckloads of trash and 300 tires taken to the transfer station.

“We are very happy with the results from this first community cleanup.  We got amazing volunteers who all did a terrific job,” said Chuck Ebner, Douglas Community Development and chairman of the event.

“The community was totally supportive of this special event. We had people honk and yell encouragement to volunteers as they drove by, and one person event stopped and helped for an hour.”

The City of Douglas partnered with The Daily Dispatch and APS for the event.

APS provided trash bags and t-shirts given to the participants, while The Daily Dispatch was involved in promotion.

Other sponsors included the Douglas High School Culinary program – provided barbeque; Wal-Mart – donated food for luncheon for volunteers; Cochise County; and the U.S. Forest Service – which provided Woodsy Owl and giveaway items after the event.

Volunteers included Richard Ross and Huber Middle School students; Don Jordan and the Douglas High School Key Club; Veronica Valenzuela and CAS;  Michelle Cardenas and the Dolphin swim team; Dave Raber and the Douglas Adult Softball Association; Douglas Fire Department; Maricella Lerma and family; Larry Blaskey and family; Michelle and Jennifer Garcia; Victoria Yarbrough; Del Carbaga and Robin Brekhus.

Each of the volunteers received a free t-shirt and bottle of water for helping with the event.

The highlight of the event for most of the younger participants was the water slide provided by the city. There were also eco-friendly games where kids could win prizes.
