SIERRA VISTA — A carnival, folk dance and mariachis are a few of the Cinco de Mayo traditions planned to celebrate Mexican and Latino heritage this weekend.

Admission is free, and food and other vendors will also be at the fiesta, said Cosetti Durazo, a member of LULAC. The China Poblana contest Saturday will feature traditional Mexican dress.
The holiday commemorates the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, an initial defeat of French forces by a Mexican militia before the final victory over France in 1867.
In the United States, the day is a time to celebrate Mexican and Latino culture, he said.
The event is also a fundraiser for LULAC’s scholarship program, which has awarded more than $70,000 to local students in the past 10 years, said Ruben Ortega, president of the Sierra Vista LULAC council. This year LULAC will award about $8,000. The scholarships are merit based and students of any race/ethnicity are eligible.
LULAC has organized the Sierra Vista Cinco de Mayo Fiesta for about eight years.
“It’s a way to share with the community some of the good things that we do,” Ortega said.
“Come out and have a good time.”
