FAIRBANK — On Saturday, an archaeologist will give a one-time tour of recent excavations at the Spanish Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate, prior to backfilling.

While young America was fighting for independence in the East, Spanish troops tried to hold out against the Apache here at the Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate along the San Pedro River near Charleston.

Excavations are now focusing on Room 28, which is in one of the officer’s apartments along the west wall, and on areas outside the safety of the presidio wall.

Meet archaeologist Deni Seymour at the turnout for the presidio at 9:45 a.m. The group will consolidate into fewer vehicles and then drive in through a locked gate at 10 a.m.

The presidio is located along the San Pedro River between Benson and Sierra Vista, off Highway 82 along In-Balance Ranch Road (formerly Keller Road). In-Balance Ranch Road is a turn (north) at mile marker 60 just west of the San Pedro River and the historic ghost town of Fairbank. Park at the turnout a couple of miles north of Highway 82.
