The first thing a homeowner is compelled to do is to burn all the weeds.
The Douglas Fire Department, however, is telling Douglas residents they must take out a burn permit first.
Otherwise, you’re burning the weeds and debris illegally.
Burning permit fees may increase from $5 to $15. The Douglas City Council approved first reading of an ordinance on May 14 that would increase the burn fees.
Residents who buy a burning permit must follow certain guidelines before burning. The material must be dry and readily combustible.
The material to be burn must be:
√ In small piles.
√ Collected in a pit.
√ Placed in an approved waste burner.
√ Ignited in place.
√ Minimize the material to be burned.
√ Prevent the fire from spreading by lining the area where burn is conducted and application of a fire retardant foam or water.
√ Allow the material to dry before burning.
√Extinguish the smoldering burns.
Materials that must NOT be burned are:
√ Bottles for household chemicals
√ Grocery and retail bags.
√ Crankcase oils
√ Transmission oils.
√ Oil filters
√ Pesticides lead components
√ Cadmium compounds
√ Mercury compounds
√ Tires
√ Batteries
√ Aerosol cans
√ Tar paper.
