The Ward 1 council seat election is set for May 20, 2008.

Alfredo Garcia and Margaret Morales will compete for that seat.

Since no candidate in Ward 1 received more than 50 percent of the vote during the March 11 primary election, the City Charter requires the two candidates who received the highest number of votes of votes to compete in a run-off election, said Brenda Aguilar, the City Clerk for Douglas.

In the March 11 elections the Douglas community voted Michael Gomez as mayor.

Bon Fernandez was elected to Ward 3; Ray Shelton to Ward 4; Ivan Huish to Ward 5 and Louie Acedo to Ward 6.

Biogrphies of each candidate are listed below

Alfredo R. Garcia

Alfredo Garcia is seeking the vacant Ward 1 seat on the Douglas City Council.

Garcia is a long time Douglas resident.

He is married and has four children, all of whom are graduates of Douglas High School. He himself is a graduate of Douglas High as well as both Cochise and Pima Colleges.

He has spent three years on the Douglas Planning and Zoning Committee.

Margaret Morales

Margaret Morales is seeking election to the Douglas City Council on the vacated Ward 1 seat.

Morales attended Douglas public schools, graduating from Douglas High School in 1972. She also attended certification and licensing classes for her Insurance Agent License at Ford School.

She has served the city as three-year board member and two-year president of the Douglas Chamber of Commerce; member of the Douglas Noon Lions Club; member of the Immaculate Conception Church; past member, Cochise County Independent Insurance Agents; and starting coordinator, Weight Watchers.

She was also involved in the 2006 Shop At Home campaign, helped bring the Harlem Ambassadors to Douglas and had two successful years of Chamber of Commerce banquets.

She is the current clinic manager for Arizona Family Care Associates.

Morales, a lifetime resident of Douglas’ Ward 1, is married to Douglas native Henry Morales, and have three adult children: Henry, Jr., Robert and Cynthia, and three granddaughters.
