Ever since he was a young boy, Carlos Benavides would join his father at his dentist office and would watch his father work. He would ask his father about one dental procedure or another. Today his boyhood fascination with dentistry has compelled him to follow in his father’s footstep.

Benavides, 18, a senior at Douglas High School and the 2008 Salutatorian, will enroll at the University of Arizona, where he will major in physiology.
After he graduates from the U of A, he will apply to dental school in Colorado and New Mexico, he said.
In looking back at his academic career, he credits his parents for much of his success.
“I look up to my father. He has been a mentor to me,” he said.
During his four years at DHS, Benavides worked hard in order to accomplish his academic goals. He has taken Zero Period all four years, meaning that he was in class by 6:30 a.m. He has taken Advanced Placement tests in calculus, English, French and physics.
He has also balanced out his academics by joining the basketball team and the swim team.
“Taking a rigorous schedule has prepared me not only for the university but also has taught me a lot about time management,” he said.
With that in mind, he reminds all freshmen that if they too aspire to high academic achievement, they need to work hard and put their studies first above all else.
“Always allow yourself to be challenged by taking a rigorous schedule,” he said. “In the end it will pay off.”
