If you live in Douglas, you should give back to the community.

Morales

That refrain has always been in Margaret Morales’ thoughts as a member of the Douglas Chamber of Commerce and during her Ward 1 council seat campaign.

On Tuesday, May 20, Morales was elected as councilwoman for Ward 1, beating out Alfredo Garcia.

“I’m very excited about being on the council and I look forward to learning about city government,” she said.

She will be the only woman on the council. With that in mind, she believes that her gender will bring a good mix to the all-male city council.

But most of all she hopes that the mayor and council will work together in order to bring and maintain a greater quality of life for Douglas residents.

With the proposed call center coming closer to fruition, Morales believes that it will not only create much needed jobs for Douglas but also help revitalize eastside Douglas.

For the downtown area, she believes that the proposed Government Plaza will help revitalize the business area.

But what she would like to see is that the community be more involved with city government. As a result she wants to change the council meetings to the evenings so that people have more access to them.

As a councilwoman she said she will review both sides of an issue before arriving at an opinion.

As for her constituents in Ward 1, she said that she hopes they will come to her with whatever issues need to be addresses.

“I want to thank all voters who supported me during the run-off elections,” she said.

Morales will take office on June 11.
