College sets hearing on tax rate

SIERRA VISTA — A drop in the primary property tax rate for Cochise College and the fiscal year 2009 budget will be among the topics discussed when the college Governing Board holds a public hearing at 6 p.m. June 10 at the Sierra Vista campus.

The hearing will be in the Horace Steele Conference Room, Andrea Cracchiolo Library, Cochise College, 901 N. Colombo Ave.

The primary property tax rate will drop from 1.7430 per $100 of assessed valuation to 1.6604. Because of increasing valuations of Cochise County properties, the college anticipates a $294,485 increase in the overall amount generated from its primary property tax levy.

Despite the levy rate reduction, state law requires community colleges to hold a public truth-in-taxation hearing and to use specific language whenever a state-mandated formula so determines.

“For example, the proposed tax increase will cause Cochise County Community College District’s primary property taxes on a $100,000 home to increase from $162.78 (total taxes that would be owed without the proposed tax increase) to $166.04 (total proposed taxes including the tax increase),” a portion of the college’s notice reads.

“This proposed increase is exclusive of increased primary property taxes received from new construction.”
