A Douglas woman was arrested in connection with more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana seized from a south side home on June 1.

Cindy Maria Sanchez-Armenta, a lawful permanent resident, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, said Vincent Picard, the spokesman for Customs and Immigration Enforcement.

The arrest stems from a joint investigation between ICE and the Douglas Police Department.

The investigation began Sunday when ICE received information that several vehicles loaded with marijuana had crossed the border illegally near Douglas.

Through further investigation, the agents located the residence where the marijuana was purportedly being stored, Picard said.

The agents and officers set up surveillance. At about 5:45 p.m. a tan Chevrolet truck with Mexican license plates was observed pulling into the rear of the home at 1006 5th Street.

Shortly after, ICE agents and Douglas police officers of the Special Response Team approached the house and served a search warrant.

Inside the home the agents found 67 bales of marijuana weighing 1,229 pounds, Picard said.

“Thanks to the partnership formed among different law enforcement agencies in Douglas, drug trafficking organizations will find it increasingly difficult to operate in this area, said Scott Brown, assistant special agent in charge of the ICE office of investigation.

Sanchez-Armenta had her initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Tucson yesterday. A criminal complaint is simply the method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt, Picard said.

" I really believe we should be posting the pictures of everyone that gets caught drug smuggling either in town or at the port of entry. Even if the people arrested are minors.

I think it goes with what a high school teacher once told us. He believed that we should not publish the Honor Roll list, but instead the F or failing list. You better believe that if Billy's dad reads his son's name in the paper, where he knows his friends and co-workers will also read it, there would be immediate action by the parents. "
