In a tearful goodbye, Superintendent Gail Zamar bid farewell to the district at her last regular meeting as the head of the district.

“I thank you for your efforts in making DUSD a better school and Douglas a better community,” Board President Chuck Hoyack said.
The board at the June 3 meeting also approved the Performance Pay Plan for the 2008-09 year, along with an increase of $400 a year for contracted ESI teachers. This is the first raise for ESI instructors and matches the proposed raise for the rest of the certified staff.
The board also approved health insurance benefits for directors. This had been a past practice, but it is not stated in policy, so it had to be approved by the board.
In other action, the board:
√ Approved the hiring of art teacher (Huber Middle School) Michelle Hurtado, at a salary of $32,900; Ag science teacher (Douglas High School) Brit Groves at a salary of $46,460; CTE performing arts teacher (DHS) Mark Silverstein at a rate of $33,390; ELL Specialist Carolyn Toland at a rate of $40,349; and counselor (elementary) Scott Muller, at an hourly rate of $50.
√ Approved stipend for CTE teachers for additional work for Mark Silverstein, $2,554; Amy Paulmeyer, $4,223; and Ed Gorman, $3,602.
√ Approved the hiring of Office Aide (Clawson) Natalia Rios at an hourly rate of $7.02.
√ Approved summer maintenance crew Gilbert Gastelum and Michael Davila at a rate of $6.90.
√ Approved volunteer Nina Allen.
√ Approved job description of Director of Office of School Improvement.
√ Approved a salary adjustment in the amount of $12,000 for Leanne Marston as Director of Office of School Improvement.
√ Approved revisions to Maintenance Worker I and II, Data Support Clerk and New Student Center Registrar job descriptions.
√ Approved support staff for the 2008-09 school year.
√ Approved the resignations of Jose Delgado, ELL teacher at Huber; and Anna May Stern, English teacher at DHS; and support staff Juanita Garcia, DHS attendance clerk.
√ Approved out-of-state travel for Ron Ellsworth, Abe Grijalva and Katie Walker to attend the National Strength & Conditioning Association conference in Las Vegas; Career & Technical Education teacher Mitchell Nelson and DHS students Johanna Urquijo, Bryana Salazar and Alyssa Monarrez and chaperone Nina Allen a to attend the Health Occupations Students of American conference in Dallas; Career and Technical Education teacher Louie Tartaglia and Career and Technical Student Organization Skills USA student Jorge Hoke to attend the Skills USA Nationals Conference in Kansas City; and Javier Baca and Josephina Gonzalez to attend Powerschool University in Anaheim.
√ Approved an intergovernmental agreement with Cochise College for rental of classroom and office space for the Cochise College Adult Education Program, dual credit classes and Family Literacy Parent and Child Together Time project.
√ Approved renewal of Food Permanent Service agreement for DUSD to participate in child nutrition program.
√ Approved math programs for use in K-5 and 6-12 levels.
√ Approved multi-term contracts for 2008-09 school year.
√ Approved proposals for the ASBA Delegate Assembly in June.
√ Approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the Arizona School Alliance for workers compensation insurance.
√ Approved a memorandum of understanding with Cochise County Health Department for use of district facilities in the event of natural disaster or mass emergency.
√ Approved bids for unleaded/diesel fuel for Bordermart; and trash removal services for Waste Management.
√ Approved a one-year leave of absence to Huber Math teacher Chris Brown.
√ Approved payment of hours worked for an employee after a former principal failed to submit the teachers’ timesheets for payment.
The board is scheduled to have a special board meeting on June 25, and its next regular meeting is July 1.

It was my experience that when I was a student in the district, that it was those students that "lived in Agua Prieta" that showed more of an interest in their studies,and did better academically than the ones that lived in Douglas. The numbers don't lie. "
