McNEAL — A fire burned a McNeal business to the ground Saturday afternoon.

After months of interior work, some signs of activity can be seen from the outside at the Grand Theatre. The refurbished turquoise “Grand” sign has been refurbished and put back in place. Today,  a clean up crew of inmates were at the theatre until 1p.m. The following day two inmates will receive training  in woodworking.  These will be part of the Cochise College training program. Also on Wednesday, the broken glass in the old barber shop will be replaced. Neon lighting will be coming soon so the “Grand” sign  will soon be relit. Below, the “To Do List” of things to do in the building is slowly being checked off.

A Douglas woman was arrested in connection with more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana seized from a south side home on June 1.

Chip seal on SR 80 near Bisbee
TUCSON -  The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is will alternately close one lane of traffic on State Route 80, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., from Tuesday, July 17, through Thursday, June 19, to chip seal the road. The work will take place between State Route 90 and Mule Pass Tunnel.

Rodel Scholars
Recent Douglas High School graduates Ryan Shatto and Katrina Garcia were honored recently for being Rodel Scholars. Rodel Community Scholars are an elite group of highly motivated undergraduates attending ASU’s West campus and majoring in a variety of disciplines. They will work alongside school administrators to identify and address key issues affecting Arizona’s education system. Each will receive an annual $2,500 scholarship.

American Community Survey looks at Cochise County
The U.S. Census Bureau recently released results from its 2006 American Community Survey. This was the second year Cochise County was included in the survey, which provides annual updates to the census data collected every 10 years. Prior to 2005, only communities with a population of 250,000 or more were included. In 2005, this was changed to include populations of 65,000 or more.

A Vendor’s View: Grow your own salad greens, even in the summer
Marlene Werth and Bob Radcliff of Tombstone own Desert Blossom and are vendors at the Bisbee Market on Saturdays. Marlene is a painter and has been a florist for 25 years. She spent her childhood in her father’s large prolific vegetable garden in Washington state and works daily in her organic garden in Arizona. In between plantings and watering she spends time painting in the garden.

Art classes at the Gallery for youth
