Six teams were in Douglas this past weekend competing in the Fourth Annual Bulldog Classic.

The King Cobras, a team of players from Cesar Chavez High School in Phoenix, won the tournament finishing with a 4-0 record. They beat Sahuarita 4-3 in the championship game on Sunday scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

Douglas, Sahuarita and Cesar Chavez all finished with 2-2 records. Rio Rico and Hermosillo each were 1-3.

Douglas beat Hermosillo 6-5 on Friday and then dropped two straight on Saturday falling 14-3 to the King Cobras and 10-9 to Sahuarita.

On Sunday Douglas beat Cesar Chavez 11-1 in an early morning showdown.

Douglas’ baseball coach Gilbert Rojas said his team played well for the most part and other than one real bad inning with Sahuarita he was pleased with how things went.

“A lot of our younger players had a chance to show what they could do,” he said. “I felt we could have finished better than 2-2 but I’m okay with how things went for the most part.”

Rojas said Mark Alday threw well against Sahuarita Saturday and Tony Young had a good weekend with the bat. Against Cesar Chavez Young had a double and triple and at least five RBI’s along with scoring two runs himself.

The coach added Mauro Dominquez did a good job catching for Douglas.

“We’re young and we’re going to make some mistakes,” the coach said. “This is the time to make those mistakes so when the season starts we’ll be ready.”

The tournament ends the summer season for the older Bulldogs while the younger squad still has some games to play in the Mickey Mantle League.
