SIERRA VISTA — Hoping to glean some of the discipline and routine that has made the U.S. Army the world’s supreme fighting force, University of Arizona head football coach Mike Stoops announced on Monday that his program will be holding summer camp at Fort Huachuca.

From Aug. 13-16, the Wildcats will be working out on a pair of artificial turf fields at Eiffler Fitness Center on the fort. Practice schedules are yet to be determined, but recently hired Buena head football coach Kent Holland said that they are planning to conclude the four-day camp with an intrasquad scrimmage at Buena’s Loveless Field on Aug. 16.

“It’s a good situation for our kids to be in, to see football at the next level and what it takes to play at that level,” Holland said. “We’ll be watching their workouts.”

Somewhat ironically, from July 14-18, the Colts will travel to Cochise College in Douglas for their version of Camp Cochise, a long-running tradition in the U of A program that was stopped by Stoops’ predecessor John Mackovic in 2001.

Fort Huachuca Public Information Officer Tanja Linton said the Wildcats will interact with the soldiers and take part in obstacle course runs and the Army’s leadership reaction courses which include outdoor, adventure-based problem-solving.

Linton said the post would be happy to make this camp a regular event.

“This is a great opportunity for the community and the Army,” Linton said. “I think we can teach them a little bit about team-building.”

Arizona opens its season two weeks after closing up camp at Fort Huachuca, hosting Idaho on Aug. 30.

“What a great opportunity for two great teams to work together — the U of A Wildcats and the U.S. Army.  We look forward to hosting the Wildcats and preparing the team for their fight in the Pac 10 this year,” Maj. Gen. John Custer said. “Just like the U of A, the people of Arizona have supported our soldiers around the world. I’m sure we’ll have a great turnout of people who want to watch and meet the Wildcats here. Anything we can do to help them train and build their morale and esprit de corps — things the Army is good at — we’re happy to do. The Wildcats face challenges just like we face challenges and we look forward to training together to meet them.”
