The 13-14 year old All-Stars, coached by Eliseo Daniel, Gilbert Rojas and Chris Mariscal, were rained out again Thursday night and will play Nogales tonight at 5:30 p.m. for the District 8 championship. Should Douglas win this tournament they will head to state next week in Mesa.
Each state tournament is round robin format and expected to run 10 days. An estimated $6,000 is needed for each team.
In an effort to raise money for state the 11-12 year old All-Stars will be having a Home run Derby this Saturday at the 15th Street Park Little League field.
The event is open to kids 11-12 years of age and the entry fee is $20 per player. The top three hitters will receive prizes.
Hamburgers will also be sold during the event which begins at 9 a.m.
Gus Hurtado, manager for the Douglas All-Stars, was downtown Thursday dropping off letters asking local residents and merchants to contribute to this worthwhile cause.
“The All-Stars have to pay for their entire trip which consists of transportation, lodging, food and unexpected expenses,” the letter states. “Our league is not able to cover this amount due to financial reasons.”
The letter states because state begins next week the money needs to be raised within a four day period.
“Because some of our players cannot afford the trip we are relying heavily on the generosity of the community to help us provide the All-Stars the opportunity to represent us in one of the most exciting times of their young lives,” the letter says.
Anyone interested in helping out may contact the local All-Star coaches. Pizzarama, located at 600 North G. Ave. (364-6464) is also accepting donations for the 11-12 year old All-Stars. Contact Marty or Letty Valenzuela for more information.
