SIERRA VISTA — Vandalism, not weather, caused Arizona Public Service’s principal power line in Cochise County to go out of service Wednesday night.

APS customers in Bisbee, Tombstone, Hereford and Douglas lost power about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Bunnell said most customers had power restored by 9 p.m., with the exception of some in Tombstone, who had service back by 9:45 p.m.
APS used power generators in the Douglas area to help supply power as repairs were made, Bunnell said.
The generators are typically used during peak hours to help provide more power.
Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, said the department had not received a report of vandalism in connection to the power outage.
The outage did create a flood of calls into the Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday night, Capas said.
APS was not alone in dealing with a power outage.
Power for about 1,000 residents of Whetstone and Huachuca City went out about 11 a.m. on Thursday and lasted until around 12:30 p.m., said Jack Blair, chief member services officer with Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative.
The cause of the outage was unknown Thursday afternoon, but SSVEC continued to investigate, Blair said.
