After several failed attempts to bring in a new hotel to Douglas, it seems that finally an enterprising group will begin construction on a Best Western Hotel.

Best Western Hotel is in its first phase of construction, after several failed attemps.

A construction crew has begun the rough plumbing for the hotel on 7th Street and Pan American Avenue, said Bob Zetterberg, the project manager for Focus Construction.

“Very soon the cement will be poured for the concrete pads,” Zetterberg said.

Framing for the hotel will begin in August.

The Best Western here will be a three-story, 45,000 square foot hotel with about 66 rooms, some of which have been designated as suites. There will be a meeting room on the first floor, a swimming pool, Wi-Fi and Jacuzzi tubs in some of the suites and a fitness room. There will also be an elevator for patrons staying on the top floors. There will be no restaurant, Zetterberg said.

Zetterberg said the permit fee was based on a $4 million estimated construction fee.

The hotel is scheduled to be completed by February of 2009, he said.

Headquartered in Phoenix, Best Western is the world’s largest hotel brand with more than 4,000 hotels in 80 countries. In 2006 the company celebrated 60 years of providing quality customer care and service to guest across the globe.

" "Very soon the cement will be poured for the concrete pads" ? What kind of construction company do they employ. Sounds like someone from hicks ville, LA. I would of fired that PM who made that statement. I think the proper way of saying it is "The concrete would soon be poured for the slab on grade." "

" It's nice that Douglas will have a new and Modern Hotel. The problem is they should have been required to have a Restaurant and Lounge before being permitted to build here. Without these amenities it isn't a full service hotel! "
