Major John Chávez, a Douglas High School graduate, was deployed along with 116 other soldiers of the 301st Military Intelligence Battalion. Their exact location was not disclosed, citing that their deployment was part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

At a ceremony July 8 in Phoenix at the Arizona National Guard, Chavez was with his children, Abigail, 12; Santiago, 6; and Cristian, 9.  The ceremony was led by Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Chavez is the son of Cecil and Ana Chávez of Douglas and brother to Major Patrick Chávez of El Paso, Texas.
