Details for Ybarra’s funeral are not yet available.
Ybarra reportedly had a massive heart attack and had undergone treatment at the Tucson Heart Hospital. Last month he was moved to a Phoenix area hospital where he was undergoing additional treatment.
Family and friends close to the Ybarra’s say David had been showing tremendous improvement and they are stunned by Wednesday’s news surrounding his death.
Following Ybarra’s heart attack there was some discussion amongst the team members as to whether or not they should continue playing in the 4A state playoffs or end their season.
The team decided to continue on and played a remarkable first round game beating Mohave 3-1 on its field in the first round.
Players and coaches for Douglas wore wrist bands with words “Dave 5” printed on them. Ybarra’s daughter Stephanie, a senior captain with the team, did not make the trip to Bullhead City choosing to remain with her family in Tucson.
The emotional toll of everything caught up with the Lady Bulldogs in the next round as they fell 10-1 to Cottonwood Mingus ending the year 20-11.
