DPD Chief Melis shocked by news

News of the planned bill back to departments by the state Crime Lab was kept under wraps and came as a surprise to law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

‘I don’t know how they can do this at this late date,” said Douglas Police Chief Alberto Melis.  Cities already have the budgets completed. I don’t know where this is going to come from if it goes through.

“I am shocked that they would even talk about charging back for  Crime Lab services at this late date, especially at a time where everyone is having economic problems. The state has already put alot of economic pressure on  cities and counties without this final one.”

" So now that the state lab wants is share, the City of Douglas doesn't pay enough to their officers, are we going to have to lay off officers to solve crimes? The city and State, need to understand that we all have hard times, but Public Safety needs to be NUMBER ONE PRIORITY! "
