Quick, fun classes available at college

The Cochise College Center for Lifelong Learning is offering a new series of short-term, non-credit classes specially designed for our community. A full schedule of classes is available on the college website – www.cochise.edu – but here are some highlights.


√ Pine Needle Weaving - Learn to join pine needles to form a basket or bowl. Taught by Cake Janssen, the course meets from 2 to 5 p.m. July 26 in Room 313 at the Sierra Vista Campus. Class fee is $26.

√ Red Cross Babysitter Training - Richard Wical teaches basic skills, first aid, safety and injury prevention for sitters ages 11 and older who care for infants through school-aged children. Training takes place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. August 5 and 6 at the Bisbee Boys and Girls Club. Class fee is $50.

√  Your Winning Game: For Women and Girls Only - Margie Scott works with women and girls to define the game of life, build support networks, discover inner brilliance, and understand the traps of fashion, body image, boundaries, healthy choices, personal values, and authentic expression. Obtain personal development skills and resources to improve confidence, build self-esteem, and encourage personal empowerment. Class meets 6 to 8 p.m. August 11 and 18 in Room 313 at the Sierra Vista Campus and 6 to 8 p.m. August 13 and 20 in the library conference room at the Douglas Campus. Class fee is $25.

√ The Wonderful World of Wine - Jacquie Cook of Coronado Vineyards teaches you about one of Arizona’s emerging, fast-growing markets, shares the history of wine, the process of making wines, grape vineyard management, and the pairing of wines and food. Class fee of $40 includes appetizers and wine tasting. Class will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. August 16 at the Coronado Vineyards in Willcox.

√ Red Cross Adult CPR/AED - Richard Wical teaches participants to recognize emergency situations, help someone in breathing and cardiac emergencies, perform CPR on adults, and use a defibrillator until advanced medical help is available. Participants receive an Adult CPR skill card and manual. This class offers a one-year Adult CPR/AED Certification. Training session will take place from 3 to 7:30 p.m. August 19 in Room 313 at the Sierra Vista Campus. The class fee is $40.

√ Red Cross Infant and Child CPR - Rick Weaver teaches participants to administer CPR to infants 0-1 and children 1-12. Learn to handle emergency situations, take basic precautions to prevent disease transmission, help a child in breathing and cardiac emergencies, and administer chest compressions. Participants receive the Infant Child CPR Skill Card and manual. This class offers a one-year Infant & Child CPR Certification. Training will take place from 3 to 7:30 p.m. August 20 in Room 313 at the Sierra Vista Campus. Class fee is $40.

√ Red Cross First Aid - Richard Wical teaches participants to handle emergency situations and administer basic care for injuries or sudden illness until advanced medical care is available. The class addresses basic disease transmission precautions, bleeding, wounds, and sudden illness, as well as immobilizing muscle, bone and joint injuries. Participants receive a first aid skills card, manual, and a three-year First Aid Certification. Training takes place from 3 to 6:30 p.m. August 21 in Room 313 at the Sierra Vista Campus. Class fee is $35.  

√ Chiricahua National Monument: Echo Canyon Hike and Faraway Ranch with Rebecca Orozco. Visit Masai Point and learn about the local geology and ecology before hiking the three-mile Echo Canyon Loop trail. Visit the Faraway Ranch to learn more about the human imprint on the region. Expedition begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Class fee is $30 and participants with National Park Pass or those under age 15 receive a $5 discount. Bring a brown bag lunch to eat along the trail.
