MESA – Douglas’ 13-14 year old All-Stars closed out pool play Friday with a 6-4 win over the Prescott All-Stars at the state Little League Juniors tournament.

Douglas closes out pool play with a perfect 6-0 record and will face Casa Grande, 4-1, Saturday at 8 a.m. in the state semifinals. Casa Grande was the second place team in the other pool at state.

Mountain View Little League of Tucson won Pool A with a 6-0 record and will face High Desert, 4-1, the second place team in Douglas’ pool in the other semifinal game Saturday which is also scheduled for 8 a.m. The two semifinal winners will turn around 30-60 minutes after completing their games and then play for the state championship. That game should start between 11 a.m. and 12 noon.

The state champion will head to the Western Regional Little League tournament in Aliso Viejo, CA. on Monday. That tournament begins on Tuesday with the Arizona representative playing the host team at 7 p.m. in first round action. Teams from Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Montana and California will be competing in the week long tournament which ends Aug. 5.

Following Thursday’s dramatic win over High Desert Douglas’ All-Star coach Eliseo Daniel said his team was somewhat flat Friday and it showed in their performance.

Prescott scored once in the first inning and once again in the second taking a 2-0 lead.

Douglas did all its scoring in the third inning taking advantage of some walks and mixing in five of its six total hits taking a 6-2 lead.

Prescott countered with two runs in the fourth pulling within two at 6-4.

Miles Granados started the game for Douglas and went two innings, giving up two runs off three hits while fanning three and walking three.

Christian Dorame and Eliseo Daniel threw two total innings in relief before yielding way to Luis Barrios who closed out the game with a three inning no run performance.

Roy Aguirre hit 1 for 2 for Douglas. Granados, Rufino Salinas, Xavier Altamirano and Samuel Wright each hit 1 for 3. Diego Resendiz was 1 for 1.

Coach Daniel said his did what it had to do to win but they will definitely have to step it up today if they want to bring home the state championship.
